how do you use a waver so that your hair doesnt get poofy??? HELP ASAP!!!!?

I have the Vidal Sassoon 3-barrel waver. I want to know how to use it so that my hair doesnt poof up everytime i do it.....does it just do that in the beginning and then settle down or what?
is there a styling product i can use?!
PLEASE HELP!

The best way for your hair to not get into a poof ball, is to wear a wave cap to sleep.

a friend used this on my hair and she used a lot of hairspray. she put on the hairspray before she used the waver. alot of hairspray!! it looks good
