With all the sectarian violence in Iraq, I have been doing some research regarding the differences between the to sects. They don't seem much different, though it seems they differ when it comes to who the calipher was after Mohammed's death and some rituals like Sunnis crossing their arms in front of them while praying whereas Shi'ites keep their arms at their side.

Am I missing something huge? Is there that large of a difference that they are killing each other so indiscriminately?

ALSO, is Wahhabism an off-shoot of the Sunni sect?

Please do not bring US politics into this. It is simply a discussion about the differences between religious sects.

Sunnis are those who adhere to the Sunnah (way of the Prophet Mohammed PBUH) and who unite upon it, not turning to anything else, whether that be in matters of belief or matters of actions which are subject to shar’i rulings. Hence they are called Ahl al-Sunnah because they adhere to it (the Sunnah), and they called Ahl al-Jamaa’ah because they are united in following it.
Shiia do no follow the sunnah...they says that all the Prophet's Companions and wifes (execpt fews) are non-belivers so they can't take the Sunnah from them so they reject the Sunnah...
There is something espcial regarding the Shiaa they were not existe during the Prophet life and who established this sects his name is ABdullah bin Sab'a...who was a Jew converted to Islam..
======
Wahhabism is not a new movement in Islam but in fact they are the continuation of the Prophet Mohammed's message which is to make all types of worships to Allah and only to Allah (Pure ISLAM)...They are Sunni because they follow the Qurran and Sunnah......

i will accept as true with zun_noon. those alterations have take place for political reasons. truly, there are no longer this manner of issues as 'sects' in Islam. All who declare the theory in the only and in basic terms God and renowned that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) because of the fact the Messenger of God is a Muslim. era. The enemies of Islam could fairly like no longer something extra advantageous than to 'di-sect' the Muslim Umma; it follows the classic imperial motto of "divide and triumph over". All you who declare to be Muslim, awaken! do no longer permit your enemies divide you. no count in case you're Shi'a or Sunni, you're all Muslim brothers in the eyes of God. in case you think you have the actuality on your area, then act such as you think it! permit's provide up all this violence and non-sense. And God in basic terms is conscious perfect.

The main difference is that Shia kill Sunnis, and Sunni kill Shiites.
This goes back to the time of Moe's death -- these folk have very long memories.

Yes, they (shittes) insult the companions of prophet Muhammad (pbuh) who are the best men after prophets and apostles.

-Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)said:"don't insult my companions,as if someone pays a mountain of gold,he will not reach half what they reached" (Boukhari)
