I got my first surface piercing on the weekend, and it seems to be going fine. I didn't have any pain or bleeding or anything, but it's really quite red and sore. It's not swollen or pus-sy or anything, but the entry and exit holes are scabbing up and seem a bit dry?

I've gotten a lot of conflicting advice about looking after it. My firends have their own theories and my piercer gave me a dermatologica set with a gel wash, salt spray and antibacterial spray (whew!).
A bunch of people have told me to just soak it in salt baths, but THEN other people said that dried the skin out and would lead to rejection quicker.
I had a look around on the net and LITHA (leave it the hell alone) theory seems to have a lot of supporters amongst actual piercers...
Now i'm really confused. I know surface piercings are delicate and reject alot, so some advice from someone who's had a similar one would be nice...

It's a 3 cm staple on the top of my wrist in tygon.

scarlet_bat - maybe it's not made of tygon then, but some other sort of plastic. It's a staple in that it is like an inverted staple with the ends poking straight up through my skin. I didn't think you could get surface piercings with anything but a 'staple' shape...

The only advice you should follow is that given to you by your piercer. Usually they provide sound aftercare that works well with all bodies. The things your friends have suggested are okay, but they aren't you and don't live in your body. Some things work for some, but not for all.

Take the advice given to you by your piercer and furthermore, the holes being dry, red and irritated could be from initial piercing irritation or could be a sign of rejection. Main thing is that you keep the area clean, but don't over do it and keep an eye out for rejection. If you have question, go to your piercer, not here (no offense)

first off.....tygon is surgical tubing and not a staple, it will most likely reject due to the pressure. a staple had 90 degree bends where it exits the skin. your most likely OVER cleaning--thats y it's drying out. IMO I think you've been given too many aftercare products and would recommend the LITHA method or salt soaks

Sea salts should be used if it gets infected and full of pus. If it isn't do that, don't worry about it. Of course it'll scab up--you just punctured your skin! :)

My one pet peeve is when people tell you to use cotton balls/Q-tips. Don't do it! The cotton can get trapped on your piercing and just acts like a sponge to keep any infection/bacteria in. If you do any kind of cleaning, use your clean hands and let it air dry (or use clean cloth to pat dry it).

DO NOT soak it in salt baths!! Use exactly what your piercer gave you and you should be fine.Don't listen to any advice from your friends unless they have piercings themselves.
