Performing selfless service ( service without any hidden agenda ), is the most powerful form of worship to God.
The nature of service and the intention of the individual is important points to consider. Living and working in a buddhist monastery undoubtedly is an honourable deed. However bear in mind that you should perfom your service without any motive e.g. earning money, fame, pride etc.
Living in an environment surrounded by spritually minded souls certainly has positive impact as the surroundings are charged with positive thought vibrations. You will be less inclined to delve into unnecessary thoughts and actions.
From a physical perspective, going on a vegetarian diet will help to cleanse your body of toxins and free radicals.
In my opininon, you should definitely go ahead with it.

I'm sure if you approach it in the right 'mind' you can achieve those things. And I'm also sure that whatever happens it will prove to be an interesting experience.
But you do know you can achieve those things without a monastery don't you?
And that the most important thing is to be able to apply what you learn in everyday life?
Most anyone can develop a calm demeanour in a retreat. It's when you're late for work and you spill coffee down your only clean shirt that it really counts.

If the idea of working at a monastery appeals to you, check it out.
If you continue with it, you may find that your premise of 'what will this give me' was faulty. What you will 'get' from the experience is what you 'give.'
I forget which teacher it was talked about the three types of giving. One is giving with palms up, fist clenched. Very stingy.
The second is giving with palms up, hand open. More generous.
But the highest level of giving is palms down, hands open.
