I have two 5-6 month old kittens. They appeared to be doing fine, eating, playing etc....but one of them just peed on my husbands sweatshirt. Would they be marking their territory already...they will be 6 months at the end of March. The only other things out of the ordinary is that I have been gone a lot these last couple of weeks. Could that have something to do with it?

Oh, and they are male kitties...they are scheduled to be neutered next week...and I thought that I was getting them fixed at the right time, since it is right before they hit 6 months...perhaps they should have been done earlier.

You did not mention if these were male kitties, but when you say "marking" this is what I assume. A 6 month old male cat will start exhibiting some tomcat behavior. I never thought I would say this but you will be doing your cats a favor by having them neutered. The hormones that are starting to flood their bodies and brains will make them very crazy and they will get into fights and they will get hurt. Sounds like your "kittens" are definitely starting to do exhibit male cat traits.

Yes it is probably territory marking perhaps aggrivated by the absense of one of his humans. Sounds like you are already on schedule to have them neutered. Neutering does not completely end territorial peeing but it helps a lot. There is a great product called nature's miracle that will take out pee smell and stains. There are probably others that work well too. It is important to get the smell out before it becomes a contest to see who can mark last. You may need to be extra careful about keeping laundry put up etc. till the little guys are "fixed" . BTW sometimes it does take a few weeks for the hormones and hormonally caused behavior to get out of the cat's system.

My best advice is to take your kittens to the vet. I've had four cats, and the only time I ever experienced spraying/urinating was when one female cat would go into heat. She wasn't much of a crier, but she did spray! She sprayed all over an expensive comforter, compact discs, etc. The problem was solved when she was fixed. I think another possibility for the spraying on the sweatshirt could be a behavioral problem. You did mention you've been gone a lot in the last couple of weeks, and one (or both) of you kittens may be upset about it.

It could be they are starting to spray. That is my first guess. Get it done ASAP, before they continue on with it...HOWEVER, I have been told that getting them neutered doesn't mean they will stip spraying, once they learn how to do it.
It could also be behavorial. Our kitten, that is about 9 mos old, is neutered. I caught him the other day, trying to pee on something. As soon as I yelled at him, the little fart, left that spot, and went right to his box and finished up the job there. He was just being a turd (typical behavior for him..satins spawn one minute and as sweet as an angel the next). Clean up the messes right away, or they will continue to go in that spot. They think it's okay.
Another thing could be too, is check the box. Sometimes, they get picky if their box needs to be cleaned. My mother in laws cats wouldn't use the box if there was more than a turd or two in there...

Once they have their operation they probably stop marking their territory or spraying. Until they have their operation I'd suggest just grin and bare it.

Yeah, six months is about the time they do it. If they keep peeing like that get him checked for a UTI. Good luck with your new babies!

sometimes they just do it, but yeah, it is possible that they are marking their territory. Sometimes this can be triggered if you are ovulating or on your period.
