You bet I'd be upset! People are just getting SOOOOOO self-centered and rude ... "nobody is as important as me", the "you don't matter" attitude is ridiculous. I think that a lot of this namby pamby "don't get upset" crap can take a lot of the blame for this ... people can do anything but kill you, and you're practically supposed to apologize to THEM! As you can tell, you hit a nerve with me, LOL. Of course, if you did this late in the day or at nite, I would agree with your social worker ... you shouldn't even be AT an ATM when it is unsafe. However, you certainly DID NOT create the conflict, HE DID, by being rude and selfish. One reason so many are in prison today is because they don't need to pay consequences for their actions, and that is wrong. Just my opinion, tho.

If someone gets close enough to me to punch the cancel button while I am in the middle of a transaction, he probably won't be alive much longer. He certainly would not have time to explain his actions. There is no legitimate excuse for this kind of thing. This is not a matter of etiquette, it's a matter of survival.

Hell, I'm upset about it, and it didn't even happen to me. So, yes, I would probably have gotten into a fist-fight (ha) with the guy.
This is probably one of the most unbelievable stories I have ever heard. As for your Social Worker condemning you?... puh-leeze. Is she that passive?.... Her response sounds canned for the "role" she is in. I guess it would not be very appropriate for her to say "Yes, you should have kicked him in the groin." (ha)... Now, for safety's sake, you definitely should be careful with confrontation (even when you are in the right to do so) because it could put you in danger, but I can't imagine what type of mouse would sit back and "take it" like that so you are NORMAL.
Unbelieveable story!

Most ATMs have video survallence cameras. If you got into legal trouble because of the situation, you should look into having the authorities obtain the video. I am glad you are okay, though...that is a spooky thing to happen to someone.

I would have noted the time he canceled your transaction and then called the police and pressed charges against him for intimidation and invasion of privacy.( your space in front of the ATM.) and anything else the officers could think of you could charge him with! It is better to let the police handle a situation like this. Obviously the man was disturbed.

I think the social worker was right about you not cursing him it could have moved him to commit violence I think you were in potential danger from him

If I felt I could take him he would get punched in the face.
If I felt I could not take him, he would get kneed in the groin.
I would have done one of these as soon as he hit cancel.
My instinct would be that he's trying to rob me, which is why I would react accordingly.
