They used telephones & the U.S. Postal service & telegrams.

Well they met face to face and conversed. They used telephones just like today except they were wired into the house and could only go the length of the cord attached to it ( cordless and cell phones weren't around then. Citizen band radios and ham operators could have them either in their cars or a base station at home. Morse code was a popular way to to communicate around the world.You could send a telegram through Western Union if ya needed a letter delivered fast or you could write a letter and mail it.

Telephones, postal mail (letters, postcards), telegraphs and cable (mainly on special occasions or for business; one of my first jobs was a summer job in a railway ticket office underneath the railway's telegraph office, in a building that also had an old compressed air messaging system that connected with another railway building about three or four miles away). And, of course, walking over to a friend's house and yacking, face to face.
