My son is now almost 5 and since he was little he never moved his back much. He also never crawled like most babies do he would just go on his hands and feet like a little monkey. He also has had a very hard time with using the toilet. He has bowel and bladder problems that I have attempted to address with the doctor many times before now. I was put at a high risk level when I was pregnant and they did about 6-8 ultrasounds and they never said that there was anything wrong. Is it possible that this problem could have been undetected or is it something that they felt was not serious enough to address at that time? I was told that the bloodwork should have told them that there could be a problem and there were 2 times that they sent me into a specialist to have a more detailed ultrasound done. Is there anything that can be done now to help him so he does not have serious problems in the future. Or does he just continue to have more problems with his bowels and bladder?

Spina Bifida occulta may only leave a small dimple in the lower back or even a patch of hair. A ultrasound would not be able to pick this up not like spina bidifa mylomengolcyle (the worst forms of spina bifida) But i'm pretty sure they should have picked it up with the afp test at 15 weeks or so, Thats how they picked up that my 6yr old has spina bifida mylomenigolcyle. If he has the occulta type he shouldn't have any back trouble to my knowledge, most people with the occulta never experiance any problems. I would definately take him to see a urologist and a gastointestional doctor they are a must have for spina bidifa children, my daughter pays them frequant visits once a month as she gets chronic constipation and utis. Good luck to ya..

It is not the ultrasound that detects this. With both of my kids, they did a blood test for this.I think they missed it.You should go back and check your records to see if you have signed not to do this test then.Usually if you don't want to do a certain test, they make you sign relating documents.Anyways you should definitely take your son to a specialist to deal with this in a correct way,to make sure he gets the best health care.Good luck to you and good health to your son.

My sister has the same problems, and she started having problems around that age. Many times, if they catch it in time, they will have your child crawl again to fix it. The fact that he never crawled should have tipped the doctor off if you told him about it. You could ask your doctor about having him crawl again. My sister never did (she came before they found out about much of this stuff), and all she has is back problems (her back is pretty much ruined).
