There are two 80's style haircuts you may be describing:
Either the "Shag" ~ or the "Mullett"

these people do not know what they are talking about. I'd like to see them tell Nikki Sixx that he had a mullet. Ha ha ha....geez. Nikki had the same cut (basically) as Joan Jett. Just a very layered shaggy cut with some texture with a razor through it. Like I said before...Joe Dirt had a mullet!!!! Not Nikki...It was a bitchin cut. He still has it. Rock on...I hope you get it.

It is called a Mohawk, very fashionable then and similar to the spike look of later years.
