defender, spy-bot, ad-aware, mcafee free, and most other pograms have free, but limited software. most are anti-virus, anti-trojan. avg has a free-period anti-spy for a couple months. also, you can go to ms and get the february malware download. it come out each month and is good for prevention. the windows firewall is ok, but to get everything you may need to purchase a full-blown program. macafee, norton internet 2007, windows live onecare are all rather inexpensive. also, most can be used on two to three different computers for the same price as one. just read the package information to find out how many it can be put on. norton and onecare are for up to three, for one year.
with all the free stuff out there, putting two or three free programs on usually provides plenty of protection. just be sure you run a complete scan once every few days, or do a full scan daily by setting the program to run it at a time you know you won't use it such as in the early morning hours (3:00 am).
another thing, try using callingid.com's free program which does a risk assessment of all the sites you visit on the net. it wi;ll let you know when you are using safe or high risk sites.
if you run the yahoo norton, set it to remove cookies as well, since they get loaded from most sites anyway, and getting them off just keeps your computer from getting a bunch of uses bits of information. when you re-visit, the cookies will be re-loaded anyway. why keep them?
