Lets get things straight. This is a touchy subject, but I will try.
Basic facts of life. People KILL People. People Kill animals as well. G-U-N's don't kill People. Its just a tool. Just like a hammer, a screw driver,your kids baseball bat, a crow bar or even a 4 inch Swiss Army knife. All these things have specific uses. Unfortunately some or a lot of people use these tools to K-I-L-L people as well. So to the ignorant few who criticize guns and the responsible members of society who do carry guns, remember this;
" You will not die any less if you compare someone shooting you with a gun or an arrow for that matter, to someone bashing your head in with a crow bar or sticking a sharpened toothbrush handle to your heart."
Back to the Question:
If all of us were created equal and we all had the same amount of stamina and powerful punches like Chuck Norris or Rambo, and we all fought fair all the time, then I don't think we would be needing guns. But in the real world. People don't fight fair. Somebody always wants to put one over the other. Attackers, robbers, muggers, rapists, murderers, etc are always bigger, faster and at times many in numbers. For the "professional" criminals, all their actions have been planned earlier. These are just some advantages that criminals have over every John or Jane Doe.
So for most law abiding citizens, who do not look like Rambo or kick and punch like a ninja warrior, the quickest and easiest deterrent is a gun. This gun should always be a gun carried for self defense.
It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
Having said all of this, the answer is YES, people should carry guns for self defense. But, They should also have the knowledge and skill to use it. Regular training and visits to the range is a must.
PEACE!

States that have "shall issue" concealed carry laws average 24% to 28% lower crime rates than other states. These are not my numbers but number that can be obtained by going through the FBI's Uniform Crime Report.
It is not rocket science to figure out that criminals prefer unarmed victims.
One person answered that all guns should be banned. It would work about as well as banning meth has. One more drug law would have zero impact on criminals. Criminals, by their very definition don't obey the law. In England where they banned almost every gun 10 years ago, now has crime spiraling out of control. Just yesterday one of the bans strongest proponents ten year ago came out and admitted that the ban was a complete and total failure.
All banning guns would do is leave the law abiding defenseless while the criminals would still have their guns would and crime would be rampant. Somehow people who would ban guns seem to think that the government has a magic wand that will make all the criminals turn their guns in along with the law abiding. It just ain't so. Get a grip on reality.

Very very good question but even harder to answer. If you look at the crime rates where citizens are allowed to carry guns the crime rate is on the low. At the same time if you look in some countries in Europe where gun have been banned except for the police the crime rate is higher than it is in say Los Angeles or even New York. I'm not saying that everyone should carry guns. I think it should depend on your job if your a shop owner. Yes you should allowed to carry to protect your investment. No if you work in say a church do you need to be carrying a gun unless you are dealing with the money. I can do more damage with a knife than a gun. But in self defense it's up to one thing no matter if you pull a knife or a gun you better be ready to face the consequences.

Are you asking, "Should people carry guns in case they have to defend themselves?"
Answer: This is one reason for carrying a gun.
However, the fact that you can own a gun does not automatically make it legal to carry one. Many States now require a concealed carry permit. And something that no one wants to hear, just because you have a concealed carry permit doesn't automatically mean that you can use your gun. You could still be charged with homicide. Self defense is usually a defense from prosecution, but you'll probably still have to go to trial and hire a defense attorney. Costly, but better than being dead, going to the hospital or going to prison.

Bound's hubby here:
Yes. I believe every law abiding citizen should have the right to carry a handgun for self-defense. Contrary to what an earlier answerer said, concealed carry does have a positive effect on crime.
First, the police do not exist to prevent crime. They may deter crime, but their job is to respond to and investigate crime. Today's predatory criminal (especially those younger criminals involved in the drug trade) know this. The individual bears certain responsibilities to insure their own safety.
Remember about 10 or 15 years ago when foreign tourists were attacked and, unfortunately, killed? This was a direct response to Florida's new concealed carry law. Because of that new law predatory criminals knew the tourists would be the only unarmed potential victims they could attack.
Most criminals are not dumb, but they are cowards. and they will avoid the chance of risking injury while living their criminal ways.
How do you plan to insure your safety?

People have constitutionally, this right is in order to maintain a "well organized militia." According to statute law, a "well organized militia" refers to the 5th level of National defence readiness, which is basically when all hope is gone and the President asks every able bodied human with a gun to start an insurgency against the invader. Interestingly, the phrase "well organized militia" in the 2nd ammendment renders certain uncontroversial weapons constitutionally unprotected. Low calliber vermin rifles, airguns, and stun weapons, for example. They do not contribute to a militias ability.
Now, should you carry a weapon for self defence? It depends on you. If you are willing to put the time into learning how to use it properly and lawfully, are psychologically prepared to use it when necessary, and mature enough not to use it when unnecessary, you should have one. Why not? If you are lacking any of those criteria, you endanger yourself more by having it.

There is a serial killer that operates in my area that no one seems to be able to catch or even have a clue about.
It is very clear that the Police are not here to protect me or my family. They are here to clean up the mess of my dead body after it's been killed and collect evidence to possibly prosecute someone at a later date.
I do not think the police are doing a bad job......heck, in a free society more police mean less freedom.....I just think that personal responsibility carries with it a measure of defending oneself from those that might do you harm.
There is no better personal defensive tool than a handgun and I always have the right tool for the task. I am well trained, well practiced and I have the will to defend myself and others.

By "should", do you mean personally, or by law? Personally, if you are capably trained to use firearms sensibly, then by all means, you could be a force for safety in our society. If, on the other hand, you are an idiot, or a gun nut, you should stay as far away from guns as possible. Now, if you mean "By law", then I will simply state that any law written to abolish firearms will only remove them from the hands of the law-abiding. It will do nothing to curtail gun crime, and it would have done nothing to have saved the life of anyone's friend, no matter how young or innocent they were. The person wielding that firearm killed your friend, not the firearm. They would have had a gun even if the Constitution banned all firearms. Laws only affect the law-abiding.

Yes, i believe people should be aloud to carry. They should meet certian requirements first though. They should qualify for a carry permit. If i am not mistakin you can still qualify if you have been charged with but not convicted of violent crimes. These hot heads defenatly should not be allowed to carry. I now a lot of you will say that is unconstitutional. But very indepth background checks are a must. I also think people who break the law should actually be punished. If you murder some one while comiting a crime you should be put to death. I do not mean 20yrs down the road. I mean take them out and hang them in the street. I can't think of anything that would detear crime like public exicution. I think a cool head with the presence of a firearm will end a situation. Case in point, a friend and my self went out after work one night to grab some food and a couple of movies to take back to the wives. Any way, coming out of the movie place we noticed a couple in the parking lot arguing. We noticed she was trying to walk away but he grabbed her and drug back to him. Then, he slapped her. That made us go over. My friend dialled up 911 while we aproached. We asked the lady if she needed any help, and she said yes. The man turned to face us as we sent her into the store. After questioning our heritage and calling us a few other names this man took a small bat out of his car. As he started our way i drew open my coat displaying my revolver and, asked if he was sure he wanted to do this? He decided to back off and got in his care to leave. On another occasion i had a young man jump in my truck at a gas station and tell me that i was going to take him to such and such place. I drew my revolver and politely asked him to unass my vehicle. Spell check isn't working, give me a break.

Yes i have carried guns for years legal i might add i went through all the training here to do so. I am a medically retired Dep. Sheriff and cant really fight off an attack anymore so to protect my family and myself i am armed 24/7 and have had to pull it out on occasion. Society seems to want criminals around and want to protect criminals rights we will have problems until everyone fights back.Killing is different than murder and make no mistake about it i will in a heart beat to defend myself and family.
