New Born's must have bottles, I would say at least 8 of them.
you need diapers, lots of them.
formula if not breast feeding.
receiving blankets. you will use these a lot so you will want to get quite a few of these.
Under shirts and sleepers are what new borns wear the most.
You absolutely have to have a car seat for the baby.
A crib or a bassinet.
You will need bath supplies baby magic, towels,
powder, desitin, wipes,
you need to remember babies spit up a lot so you need to have enough clothing to get you through to the next load of laundry. If you have your own it washer and dryer you can get buy with doing laundry every day you wont need as many but if you have to go a few days in between well you better stock up I know my babies went through about 4 sleepers every day. that means 4 under shirts to. and receiving blankets.
you can wait on the high chair and play pen and stroller you wont really need them for a few months.
you will need alcohol swabs for the belly button or you can just get a bottle of alcohol and some cotton balls. Vaseline if you have a boy and you have them circumcised

well i know one thing every time you think you have it all.... you better head to the store again!!
i learned if you have a spitter like my son was, you can't have enough onesies or tees that you can change easily. bibs bibs and more bibs. spit rags/burp cloths. (i bought cloth diapers for that and cheap dish towels) of course don't stock up on all that until you find out whether or not you got a spitter because i stock piled in all of that when i had a second one just for her not to hardly ever spit up!
socks are ALWAYS gettin kicked off can't have enough of those. onesies are great for just around the house. you really only need a couple blankets.
obviously you need the car seat and stroller.
a couple hats.
if you don't have a washer and dryer at home you may want to invest in plenty of clothes you never know when you'll have any accidents.
in the diaper bag always carry the following:
an extra set of clothes for the baby
an extra shirt for you (it comes in handy trust me)
an extra small blanket
wipes
sanitizing hand gel
extra diapers
bottle
changing pad
tissues
ointment
if you have a baby shower you will generally get pretty much everything you need especially if you have moms at it.
GOOD LUCK!!

I think you've already gotten some pretty great answers that cover just about every possible aspect, but listen... ALL OF THAT WILL BREAK YOUR BUDGET!
You need a carseat.
Maybe three sleepers or layettes, three onesie shirts, and three pairs of pants.
A hat
Diapers and wipes (wal-mart brand White Cloud is a great buy with great protection, even for breast-fed babies who literally explode!)
Two or three blankets to tightly wrap the baby in for comfort and warmth.
Breast feed if possible (best nutritionally and financially!)
Baby wash or Dove unscented body soap.
This is really ALL that you need. I had so many THINGS I didn't know what to do with them! It was nice to have a nearly endless supply of clothes for the baby, but it made me lazy about doing laundry! Newborns do not play with toys and really want to be held and talked to by their Mommies and Daddies more than anything else.
God Bless!

car seat - 1
stroller - at least one(i recommend 2...one for each vehicle so u always have one)
as far as clothes go....onsies..onesies..onesies...and sleepers....
newborns spit up and sometimes a bib doesn't always catch it all
lot of onsies and sleepers
lots of blankets there are never enough....i have over 20(3 kids worth)
diapers , baby wipes, diaper bags (i recommend 2, a small one for short trips and one for an over night supply), bottles( it depends on if you feel like washing bottles all day(the ones with disposable liners are more efficient in my house , formula(if not breastfeeding), q-tips and rubbing alcohol to help dry out the umbilical cord, hand sanitizer comes in handy when you cannot get to a sink to wash your hands or for others who want to hold your baby, u can get a traveling case with clippers, comb, thermometer, and a bulb syringe to help clear the baby's nasal passage....crib or bassinet, diaper rash cream and a list of emergency contacts for your diaper bag for the daycare/babysitter... good luck

Diapers

Onesies
Blankets
Burp Rags
Newborns don't need much, they eat, burp, sleep & poop. They need someone to take care of them, hold them, change them, feed them & most of all love them. :o)
