Just choose the dotted sqaure. (2nd one from the top row) If you want to crop the picture without using the square shape then use the dotted star which gives you more freedom of cutting out the image.

Hello Laura Ann. I don't know how to crop a picture in paint, but there are two real good free programs that will do that and much more for you. The first I'd use and recommend is FastStone Image Viewer, and another good one is PhotoFiltre. All you have to do is open up the program, click open for which file containing the image, and on the sides click on crop board. Put the cursor at the beginning for what you want to keep, and then click save as. This way you've got your cropped image as well as your original should you need it. These are free online probably at www.snapfiles.com or www.nonags.com. The apps work well and are free of virus or malware. Hope this helps!
