I was doing some research on some cities in California and I found some good choices: Newport Beach, Long Beach, Hermosa Beach, Santa Monica, and some places in San Diego. Could some one tell the me the advantages/ disadvantages of some of those? Which one would still allow me to live my dream of living in a beach city with out still making me go broke!

San Diego is a beautiful clean city. It has a variety of different neighborhoods each with its own unique characteristics. One of them would probably be the perfect fit for you. The best way to decide is to visit and spend some time in each of the areas you are considering.

I would have to say all cities in California will cause you to go broke! However, given the overall situation and the choices you gave, I would easily choose San Diego! Better climate, more relaxed lifestyle and less crime than the LA metro area which is essentially grouped into your other optional city choices. Long Beach, except for a few areas is becoming a ghetto, Santa Monica is way over expensive only because of it's location. Hermosa is in the LAX flight path. Newport would be the only other option I would recomend but the traffic to get anywhere from there; Aarrgghh! My personal favorite So Cal beach community is San Clemente which is in far southern Orange county next to the SD county line.Good luck!

San Diego and Newport Beach are the best of the two you mentioned. San Diego is the easiest place for someone to transition that is not from a big city. LA has tons to offer, and it's fine if you can find a place near your work. I lived in SD in the 90s and I plan to go back. The climate is amazing, and the place is welcoming. There a lot of people in SD from the midwest and other states generally - so it's not snobby.

This doesn't answer your question directly, but I can't resist putting in a plug for my favorite CA city - Santa Barbara. It's expensive, but what a wealth of beauty! After an earthquake in the mid-1920s knocked most of it down, SB adopted some strict architectural codes for the downtown & the result is a magnificent Spanish architectural motif & nothing higher than 3 stories. No building is allowed right on the beach, which makes it the most unspoiled city beach area in California. It has a wonderful walking/rollerblading path along the ocean, plus Stearn's Wharf with its own shops & restaurants & fishing opportunities.

In addition to the beach area, there is scenic State Street with all its restaurants & shops; the beautiful mission, one of the finest in CA; and the Santa Barbara Zoo - might not equal San Diego's, but it is very nice in a smaller way.

I can say Santa Monica City. For starters the rent is not as expensive as other beach cities if you reside maybe one mile from the beach. The city is well kept and its crime rate is low.
It has a very good bus transportation system trough out the city and surrounding cities. Also you can just ride a bike to the 3rd street promenade and hang out in a lounge at Starbucks go to the pier or the beach and read a book.
Theirs basketball court close to the beach, volleyball court and just a nice view of the Santa Monica mountains on the north side and palos Verde on the south side. On a clear day you can see Catalina island mean while your riding on your bike to your neighbor city of Venice beach.
Theirs hiking trails on a bike distance that you can take advantage and not too far is UCLA and Santa Monica college.
Downtown has everything you can imagine and right now the city is remodeling around city hall and Santa Monica court. This city has allot of money from tourism and all them tickets they be giving.
I can go on for ever but their is two disadvantages.
I can say that the beach around the Santa Monica pier is not very clean, so you might want to be cautious and the city attracts bums from surrounding cities. They usually hang out in downtown and they don't look that dirty.
Well I just gave you a little of the West Side of Los Angeles I hope this helps.

I would also recommend San Diego or it's suburbs. It's not nearly as hectic as Los Angeles/Orange County and there are many options with regard to housing.
If you're looking for more of "party" town LA is the way to go, but it has serious traffic problems. San Diego has plenty to do (it's still the second largest city in the state), but traffic is not nearly as bad.
Both areas have excellent beach settings.

I'm not dissing LA, but San Diego is generally considered a very livable city. To afford anything nice near a beach in LA you'd have to be a movie star or professional athlete.

Regardless, anywhere near a beach is going to expensive.
