My cat is a strange guy, he likes to lick our firplace poker (when it's cold) of all its ash. I caught him last night again for the third time since we've gotten the fireplace (recently). He also licks tape whenever he can. I know its not safe, but is it really dangerous? He's our baby and we don't want him getting sick.

The Ash could dangerous for you kitty... Ash is a big problem as it causing urinary tract infection and even complete kidney failure in cat.... I was told by my vet to always look for the ash content in the cat food I buy and make sure I always purchased the lowest amount possibe.... Now as for Tape ?¿? I dunno.... May be you could buy him a roll of stamps instead and get your evenlopes all nice and licked and ready to mail (just a joke) Your cat is a bit wierd when i stop to think about it.... Go buy some Kat Nip they love to eat it and maybe he'll just forget about the tape and fireplace altogether

There has been some mention that ashes are carcinogens (in humans) so you may want to wash off the fireplace poker. I haven't heard anything bad about tape.

It could be that he just likes the taste, or trying to get something out of it, like vitamins or minerals. Both cats and dogs will eat gra ss and dirt sometimes when they need extra minerals in their body, just like us sometimes when we have a craving for a certain type of food, like steak, to get iron and such out of it. If you really concerned about it, try getting a fire-grate to cover the fireplace and tools so that he can't get to it. If he's licking tape, sticky tape, he probably just likes the feel of it - get him a scratching post and some catmint toys.

the tape is dangerous yes because of the adhesives. but i would not worry about the poker she might just need more salt in her diet. if you want her to stop just lightly spritz her with water when you see her doing it and that should curb the behavior.

It would seem that he might be lacking in some minerals in his diet, you should check with a vet to be certain. My cat licks the inside of plastic shopping bags.....like walmart bags, it is truly bizarre!
