Yes, but more importantly than that, it defined acceptable behavior in society. It also helped to create a hierarchy so the rich would be in control of the poor and uneducated.

Maybe some of it, but science still can't explain how life originated, and I don't believe it ever will. Also religion involves more than just exlaining the physical world.

yes, All people have ways of explaining how we came about. As for the heaven part I feel that man doesn't want to be dead so they make up an afterlife.
