Hi, My daugther is 4 years old, and NEVER gets sick. . . . so I am a little rusty with the basics. . . .she's running a 102 temp, is acting a tad groggy, but otherwise is acting normal. . . she has a head cold and had started dry heaving which is why i took her temp ( I think she was dry heaving because of the mucus) her temp was taken after being asleep for several hours if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any help!!

i work in the er and people bring their kids in all the time with fevers. it is important to lower the fever before panicing! try some baby tylenol which is a fever reducer. if the fever persists throughout the night then make an appointment with your pediatrician tommorow...if the fever gets higher or you think that it is an emergency your local er can see you :)

The change in seasons, from winter to spring, means different things for different people. For some, it is the beginning of baseball season, while for others it is a time to start planting their gardens. Unfortunately, it is also the time when many children become sick with a fever.

A child gets a fever when his or her body temperature rises above normal. Although a child can get a fever from many types of colds or other illnesses, it commonly occurs as a result of seasonal allergies or a climate change. A child's normal body temperature is about 97.F. A child has a mild fever when his or her temperature is 100.F by mouth, 99.F by armpit or 101.F when a rectal thermometer is used.

To treat a mild fever, AMERIGROUP recommends the following steps:

Have your child drink plenty of liquids.
Have your child rest in bed.
For a high fever, sponge your child with medium warm water.
Do not let your child take a shower -- it could make the fever rise.
You should call the doctor if your child has a fever of 102.F and has any of these symptoms --

The fever has lasted 48 hours.
Your child has an earache or sore throat that won't go away.
Your child is throwing up or has diarrhea.
Your child has diabetes or kidney disease.
Your child has just gotten his or her shots.
If you ever feel that your child's health is in danger, call your child's doctor or go to the hospital immediately. Your child should definitely be taken to the hospital if --

Your child has a fever with seizures.
Your child's breathing is different and strange.
Your child has a stiff neck.
Your child is feeling sleepy, confused and not alert

Normal Temperature For 4 Year Old

103-104 you can put the child in lukewarm water to get the temperature down at this point, call the emergency room and ask is another answer.
==================================
Children whose temperatures are lower than 102 degrees Fahrenheit (38.9 degrees Celsius) usually don't require medication, unless they're uncomfortable. There's one important exception to this rule: If you have an infant 3 months or younger with a rectal temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) or higher, call your baby's doctor or go to the emergency department. Even a slight fever can be a sign of a potentially serious infection in very young infants.

For older children, take behavior and activity level into account. By watching how your child behaves, you can get a pretty good idea as to whether he or she has a minor illness or needs to be seen by a doctor.

The illness is probably not serious if your child:

is still interested in playing
is eating and drinking well
is alert and smiling at you
has a normal skin color
looks well when his or her temperature comes down
And don't worry too much about a child with a fever who doesn't want to eat. This is very common with infections that cause fever.

Your child is fine. It's very common for young kids to have a fever of around 104 degrees, without it being a serious problem. You will waste time and energy going to the urgent care or ER. Your baby will be happier at home. If your son complains about pain in his ear, take him to the doctor. Otherwise, give him pineapple (good quality not from a can) juice because it has electrolytes and kids don't eat enough when they have high fever. If he is awake, give him a cool (not cold) bath and jsut let him sleep.

If after you give her some Motrin, Tylenol or Advil and her temp is still hovering above 99, then I would take her in. Its suggested to take your babies to urgent care if they have a fever of 102, but not necessarily 4 years of age. Her body is naturally trying to fight off infection.

I hope she feels better soon!

Keep her hydrated, even though she is throwing up.

Childrens Motrin or Tylenol...do not put blankets on her and keep her in a short sleeve shirt and light bottoms (bundling just keeps the heat in) keep her hydrated and give her a tepid bath...102 is not high for a child.....children's bodies tolerate fever better than adults....My son used to run 106 temps because of tonsilitis....If the fever persists for more than 2-3 days then she needs to see the pediatrician...Good Luck!

102 is the max I would let her temp get at that age. I am sure too she is throwing up because of the congestion. Start with tylenol and you can alternate with ibuprophen. This works well for high temps in children. If you have a vaporizer or humidifier hook that up and if the fever stays up I would recommend seeing her pediatrician tomorrow. That groggy thing is normal with a high fever. Hope she feels better soon.

If she is running a 102 it is ok just keep her temp down, and if in a couple days it is still persisting take her to the doctor. If she is vomiting quite a bit you can go the the emergency room and they will give some thing to help. Dry heaving is a sign of dehydration and you might want to just go ahead and get her to the hospital if she is throwing up a lot.

well good parenting for asking and being concerened the danger zone is 103 and above this may sound weird but put a cool washcloth on her head this will lower her tempature slowly if you try and lower it to fast she will actually get worse get a vaporizer in her room put some vicks on the outside of her pajamas not on her avoid milk and dairy products as they cause muccus and congestion for about 24 hours and presto you have a happy healthhy 2 year old by the way i am a peditrician
