What is double occupancy room in a hotel? Does it mean the charge is for 1 room in which 2 people are staying?
Also, why is it more expensive that single occupancy room?
Thanks

There's some good answers above, but I'f like to clarify yat hoteliers consider a double room essentially a room with a double bed, for 2. Often they have enough room for more, and they call this "extra beds" - usually 1 or 2.

A twin room is also for 2 persons, except the beds are seperated. So typically this is suitable for family or friends who do not want to sleep together. These can also have "extra beds" assigned to them.

The reason why twins and doubles cost more is that they usually occupy more space and require more room servicing ( cleaning etc ) ..... so this is costed in. Usually a single room is around 75% of the space of a twin or double and the price reflects that.

If you want to run your eye down some pricing and see how room charges differ, go to a website like the one below and dig into the pricing / room configuaions and see how they differ:

Double occupancy means the price is per person and the room is usually larger than a single room.
The per person rate should be a little less than the price of the double
In many countries within Europe I found it's best to ask for two beds. If you ask for a double bed, often the room is just a little larger than the bed and there is not much room to get around.
And the price is the same. This was the advice given to me by the concierge at a Paris hotel, and I found it works.

Yes. Double occupancy means 2 people in one room. It's higher because there are more towels being used, more water being used, sometimes 2 beds to be made instead of 1, etc. . .

sometimes a tour is a set price PER PERSON - double occupancy

meaning - here's how much each of you will pay
by staying two in a room

the single rate will be HIGHER, of course
