I was going through a major depression several years back. It lasted 2 weeks and I was to the point that I felt completely hopeless and devoid of compassion for anyone else. After praying and feeling like God had left me completely, I decided to try fasting (I'd never done it before). I fasted for 1 full day (24 hours), and the next day I woke up and found that my depression was completely gone! God honored my fast!!!

The only fast that I've actually officially done (it's very very difficult for me to fast due to health problems) was an organized fast called the 30 Hour Famine done by World Vision. To be honest, during that time, though my group played games, and did a lot to see how it would be to live in poverty, the most important time for me was when we were having a candlelight vigil and snuffing out a candle every time a child dies in Africa from hunger. The most moving part was definitely being in prayer for the hunger that so many people experience, and that God open our eyes during the fast that we can better see him, and better relate to him.
Overall, that fast was a great experience of my life, not just because it showed me what it was like to go hungry, but that it showed me to be closer to God.

I fast every year for a month sun up to sun down and it is very moving. It brings me closer to God and it really gives me a true empathy for those who are really hungry. I abstain from food and tva nd radio and nonsense conversation and I increase my prayers and I give a fixed percentage of my income every year at fasting time. It is called the month of Ramadan and it is a very spritual time where the absolute worship of God takes presidence over everything, even hunger(as it should 365 days a year)

I don't think that fasting is way that we can twist God's arm to get him to do something that he wasn't already planning to do. Rather, fasting is a means by which God brings our will into allignment with his will. The result is that as we fast, we pray according to his will and he then brings his will to pass. Thus, God makes us coworkers with him. Isn't God gracious!
