Read the lyrics to "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by the Rolling Stones. It pretty much explains the quote you need help with (I'm not doing your homework for you)

I'll try to explain with an example.
I need the strength within myself to overcome self-confidence issues at work. Just the same, I also don't need the little cliques that form among my co-workers.
In other words, there are things that I do need to have for my benefit; however, there are things that I can just as equally well do without. NOT having these things (like the cliques at work) would also help serve my self-confidence (though since we're on the subject, I must say that most of the responsibility of overcoming my issues lie within me).
Hope this makes sense.

For example: in looking for potential husbands, I need someone with integrity, a backbone, financial stability, a mind for parenting, strong christian faith, etc. I don't need a cheater, drug addict, fiscally irresponsible, immature, mentally unstable man.
The list of what I need doesn't necessarily exclude the things I don't want, so it's important that I specify my 'dealbreakers', as well.

There's so many ways to interpret.
Maybe he means you shouldn't just focus on your needs all the time. That recognizing both are important

To me I think it's like you dont have the good without the bad. If every day was perfect and nothing negative ever happened to you, you wouldn't appreciate the good times that you have.

You are not pursuing what you do need, if you are wasting time pursuing something that you haven't figured out you don't need.
