i have a multi vitamin which says it provides extremely high percentages of lots of different vitamins/minerals, for example, it says it contains about 3000% of the daily recommended value for Vitamin B. Is that healthy??

It depends on your current physical status and the amounts of which vitamins and minerals you are talking about. For example vit. E is wonderful for heart health and skin health however it also is a blood thinner so large quatities can be dangerous. Vitamins are not FDA regulated so there is no specific info. on side effects and testing. Your best bet is to bring the bottle to your MD at your next visit and ask him/her to take a look and tell you if it will be safe for you.

Most vitamins are ok, even in very high doses. Your body uses what it can, and the rest is usually just sent out in urine. For example, see the Wikipedia page on Vitamin B:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_b

I know that Vitamin C is the same way - any excess is simply expelled. You may want to check other vitamins specifically, if you are concerned.

Also: this is a very good question. It is important to remember that dietary supplements, like vitamins, are not regulated like drugs are. So, they have not been as rigorously studied for effectiveness and safety.

wow...3K% of Vitamin B. Vitamin B is water soluble, not fat soluble. So it wont store in your fat and cause blockage. B vitamins have these good qualities.

Bolster metabolism
Maintain healthy skin and muscle tone
Enhance immune and nervous system function
Promote cell growth and division — including that of the red blood cells that help prevent anemia.

However, this also depends on your health. I take SUPER B COMPLEX and it has about 6,xxx% of the B value. No effects so far and I've been taking it with an antioxidant pill. Its been about 9 years since i've started and no risks to health. but as i have said it matters what age you are.

You don't need to worry because so little of a multi actually gets absorbed in the system.
" Indeed, the City of Tacoma, Washington removes over 250,000 pounds of vitamin and mineral pills and tablets from its sewers – every 6 months. And much of these vitamins went right through YOU."

I would never take a high dosage of a vitamin with out first consulting a doctor. These percentages that are put on to labels are not regulated. Taking certain vitamins at high dosages can be potent. Always research what you are putting into your body and talk with a doctor or licensed nutritionist before starting on a daily dietary supplement.

B is a water soluable vitamin, so it's okay. If you took in too much of a fat soluable vitamin, that would/could be dangerous because it would be stored in your body. Overdosing on niacin for example, can cause kidney and stomach problems. If you take ONE of those vitamins a day, you should be just fine. I don't think the FDA would approve a one a day vitamin that would allow you to overdose.

Vitamin B is water soluble meaning it's not stored in the body and have to be replaced constantly. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the body and an overdose of those are deadly. You can find out which vitamins are water or fat soluble with a simple google search.

Basically put, you can take as many water soluble vitamins as you want. You'd really have to make an effort to hurt yourself with them. Fat soluble ones can kill.

ofcourse there are certain vitamins and minerals you can't overdose on, it is dangerous, but the majority of it is passed through your system once it senses it had enough. for example vitamin c and other things you get from fruits and vegetables. if you eat alot of these they jsut get passed through once your body had the right amount, even if you ate 15 oranges or bananas in one sitting. there are things like zinc, iron that you shouldnt take too much. it will say it on the bottle. read it carfully.

the RDA is for the sedentary individual. athletes and people that exercise at a high intensity on a regular basis need far more nutrients that the "normal" person. fat soluble vitamins can be toxic but it's very hard to reach such levels unintentionally.
