It depends what you mean by "better." Generally, the right contact lenses will allow people to see the same, if not better, than glasses. Contact lenses usually give you better peripheral vision, because you don't have any frame or plastic lens in front of your eyes. If you have a higher prescription, sometimes glasses will make objects look too big or too small, due to magnification (like "Coke-bottle glasses") or minification effects.
Some special contact lenses may even improve your vision, if you are a good candidate. If you are younger and your prescription seems to keep getting higher each year, sometimes gas permeable lenses (rigid lenses) are recommended in order to try to keep your eyes from changing as much. There are also CRT (corneal refractive therapy) lenses that you can sleep in at night. They shape your eyes so that you don't need glasses as much during the day.
Glasses might be better in certain cases if you have excessive dry eyes, allergies, or some other medical condition that would not be compatible with contact lenses.
Your vision will change regardless of whether you wear contact lenses or glasses. So you don't need to be afraid of becoming "dependent" on contact lenses or glasses. Even if you do wear contact lenses, it is always good to have a pair of glasses so you can give your eyes a break. It's important to remember that contact lenses, although very comfortable when properly fitted by an eye care practitioner, are objects in your eyes. So another thing to consider would be if you can or want to take care of the contact lenses. It's also important to make sure you use sunprotection if you wear contact lenses.
A good way to figure out what you'd like to do would be to discuss your needs with your eye doctor. If you have certain jobs or hobbies, they would be able to recommend a type of vision correction that would work well for you.
Hope this was helpful.

Both actually but because the eyeglasses are more expensive, I usually go for the contact lenses.

i keep poking myself in the eye too much to risk contacts and the chances of dust getting into my eyes is rather high where i live so i'd rather not risk wearing contacts. besides, i paid over my budget for great glasses and they are not that much of a hassle when you get used to them.

Well, both do the same thing -- help you see better. But I was never too keen on shoving things in my eye, so I stick with glasses.
