If you are flying anywhere, including Canada and Mexico, you must have a passport to leave and to enter the country.

If you are traveling by land or sea, to Canada, you do not need a passport until January 2008 or later, and it is indeed to enter back into the U.S., though it is likely that Canada will reciprocate at the time the law is instituted and also require passports. Children under 16 will not need passports for land or sea travel only.

At present, you need an official photo I.D. (such as a drivers license) and a birth certificate or other document to prove citizenship.

It's not that you need a passport to enter Canada, it's that you need a passport to get back into the United States.

You can still go into Canada without a passport...but if and when they do require passports, I will still go there...it's so pretty.

We are waiting to see if the USA does indeed enforce that silly nonsensicle rule. If so we will require it to..If they drop it we will. Will I cross the line if they require it..NOPE...
