I just got a pistol for the first time ever. What's the best way to start learning to use it? How do I find someone to teach me?

Look in the yellow pages under guns and ammo... most towns have gun ranges. They are great. You can target practice as much as you like. I used to go to one called Shooters. They also have guys at these places that will show you how to correctly aim, hold the weapon, etc... at no charge.

First of all. If you are in Washington State (east side) I would be happy to give you some free lessons.
Second. I think your question is great because a lot of gun owners do not think of learning how to use it and when NOT to use it.
Third. If you are not near me, ask around and look on the Internet for your area. The NRA will most likely have an instructor in your area that will train you for a small fee.
Fourth. When looking for an instructor make sure he/she will teach you more than just shooting at a target. There are several things involved including gun retention, when NOT to shoot, how to carry a weapon, having a weapon in the home (children), legal ramifications of using your weapon. These are just a few but you get the picture.
Get a concealed carry license. A weapon in the bedroom closet does you no good when a mad man enters a mall and opens fire.
REMEMBER THIS.....If you are carrying a gun, every fight/incident you are involved in involves a gun. Many people who arm themselves without proper training will likely be killed with their own weapon.
If you want more info on this post a note and I will contact you.

I am actually a member of a sport shooting club in Aus, the SSAA (sporting shooters of australia association) and go reguarly to a matches. Find a local club or range and find out what matches you can use your pistol at, as there are different matches for different pistol and calibres. I have a small pistol that loads 22 ammunition and is a rimfire, so I attend shoots that are specific for my gun. Also, in aus we have laws that state you must provide proof of at least 6 matches/shoots over a year, for every year you hold a pistol licence (which of course you should already have). Also, i have a firearms licence for a rifle and attend a social night shoot once a month, although for rifles there is no need to record your number of matches you shoot. Good luck with your new gun, and remember to clean it every 6 mths or so to keep it in good nick. Hope this helps.

Try to find an NRA gun safety course and perhaps a pistol course. You should also attempt to find an experienced shooter to mentor you. Spend time at the range under supervision and follow the primary rules of gun safety.
Treat every gun as if it were loaded.
Never point the gun at anything you are not willing to destroy, ever.
Keep your finger off the trigger until the sights are on you intended target.
Always Know where the bullet is going to stop.
Good luck.

First of all...don't load it until you get someone qualified to teach you...call your local police...they may have a range or have classes to refer you to.....you didn't mention what type of pistol...if it's an semi-automatic...don't assume it's empty....even though you remove the clip there may still be round in the chamber....#1 reason of accidental shootings...people thought it was unloaded.

Call your local police department and ask for the numbers of any gun clubs in your area. they are usually the best place to learn. Taught my wife there. She can hit a regular coke can at 10 yards 9 times out of ten.

Look in the phone book or on the web for a local target range near you. If you contact them they will be able to put you in touch with someone who can help with lessons.

Find a gun safety course first and then a gun club for instruction and practice.
