Darlington Pair Applications

Darlington refers to the connection of two transistors in a configuration which mimics the connection and characteristics of a single very high gain transistor. Single package darlingtons save board space, and share the same electrical and thermal characteristics. They have long been used in power control and digital applications as well as some audio power amp output stages. Space savings is the key. MOSFET transistors are now taking their place in many applications, especially power coverters and controllers, due to their low cost and high performance. There are still many applications where single darlington devices are preferred over MOSFETS though.
