A freind of ours just got put in the hospital for meningitis,, they don't know if it is bacterial or viral. He was over here, about a week and a half ago. I have 2 kids, and am concerned if they can get it, or my husband and I.

Patients with meningitis typically remain contagious while they still have symptoms. People who have bacterial meningitis can be contagious for about 24 hours after they begin taking antibiotics. Incubation period ranges from 2-14 days.

They call viral meningitis Aseptic Meningitis. Recovery for viral meningitis is usually a week and a half. Bacterial is almost the same. Bacterial meningitis is treated with antibiotics and viral meningitis is sometimes just treated with bed rest or antivirals...My hubby had viral meningitis when he was 12 and no one else in his family caught it, incubation period is a week, I believe.I hope I helped. Good Luck!!

Better to be safe than sorry and check with the doctor. There have been a few cases not too far from where I live and if my memory serves me correctly I read something like 7 days. But don't go by what you may read here. Keep a very close eye on things and consult a doctor. Best wishes to your family and your friend.
