I have only ever heard those terms used by Mexicans. I have never heard a South American use them.

So it would be my son/ my daughter, and used as a term of affection in Mexican Spanish.......

It just a contraction for mi hijo & mi hija. It does not mean they can't spell.

My son and my daughter

Hijo= son and hija = daughter. It's a combination of mi and hijo/hija.

Mijo/mija is the correct spelling.

For us Mexicans, its an older Mexican showing affection to a young lady in a respectful way.
Just like you white people would say "Hello Baba."

I think Sam Elliott called Patrick Swayze this in Roadhouse. Of course he might have said MIGO (short for amigo). Or could they both be interchanged?

Nothing. If you heard it and that's just what it sounded like, you may have heard wrongly... mi hijo is my son, mi hija means my daughter.

its more of a slang term of endearment... "my son" or "my daughter" but more of a "my dear" type of thing
