It is different in every Diocese.

First there are two types of Deacons, permanent and transitional. A transitional deacon is a man studying for the priesthood. He receives this first level of Holy Orders several months before his ordination to the priesthood- kind of on the job training.

A permanent deacon is just that- permanent. He is generally a middle age or older man in a long term, stable marriage. Once he is ordained to the diaconate he cannot remarry- even if his wife dies. Some deacons who are widowed go on in their studies and become priests.

You need to contact you Diocesan Vocations office for information on the discernment and selection process and the deacon formation programs in your area.

The first thing you want to do is contact your parish priest. Talk with his about the option of becoming a deacon. He can lead you to the write place. If your on your on one of the first places to look is your diocese webpage. Most Catholic Diocese have a group of men studying for the permanent deaconate. There it will spell out for you what to do:

1. Write a application.
2. Go for an interview.
3. Begin studying.
4. Make retreats.
5. Ordination.
6. Ministry

The link below gives you more details about the deacon and his training.

The second link is about the diaconate in Pittsburgh.

Good luck!

ask your local priest. Are you considering a permanent deacon position? They can be married. A transitional deacon would be one that was studying for the priesthood.
