The highest military rank is 4 stars in all 4 services and in the US Coast Guard....which falls under the Department of Commerce.
In the Army, Air Force and Marines the title is General.
In the Navy and the Coast Guard the title is Admiral.
There are NO 5 star ranks. The titles would be called...
- General of the Army
- Geneeral of the Air Force
- General of the Marines
- Fleet Admiral of the Navy (or Cosat Guard)
During WW I and WW ll there were 5 star ranks in the US Army and US Navy. There has NEVER been a a 5 star Admiral in the US Coast Guard or in the US Air Force or in the USMC. In fact,the USAF was not in existence until 1947. It was called the US Army Air Corp in WW l and WW ll.
The Generals in the Army, Air Force and Marines are:
* 4 stars General (as in full General)
* 3 stars Lieutenant General
* 2 stars Major General
* 1 star Brigadier General
The Admiral ranks in the Navy and the Coast Guard are:
* 4 stars Admiral (as in full Admiral)
* 3 stars Vice Admiral
* 2 stars Rear Admiral (Upper Half)
* 1 star Rear Admiral (Lower Half)
To clear some things up.....
Commander in Chief is a title and NOT a rank. It is also know as CINC (pronounced SINK).
The President is the Commander in Chief for all the Armed Forces.
There were several different C CINC Europe, CINC PAC (US Pacific Command), CINC Special Operations Command and others. OCT 2002 Donald Rumsfeld directed that only the President would be known as the CINC. Former CINC titile holders (all CINC were 4 star flag officers) are now called Commanders.
The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) is a 4 star rank and is not the highest ranking member of the military. The CJCS and the Chiefs and considered as the key adisors to the President on military matters....they deal with high level policy. The CJCS and the Chiefs do not have command authority. In other words they do do command Divisions, Groups or .Armies. Nor do they command ships, squadronds or fleets or air wings.
And FYI...the last 5 star General of the Army was Omar Bradley who died in 1981.

No, Brigadier General is the lowest ranking General officer rank. For the U.S. Army, Air Force and Marine Corp, Brigadier Generals have one star, Major Generals have two stars, Lieutenant Generals have three stars and General has four stars. The highest ranking General officer rank in late World War II was called General of the Army/Air Force/Marine Corp. There are no longer any living 5 star Generals. No one in peace time can reach a 5th star.

Brigadier General is only a single star General (O-7). The highest rank is O-10 which is General (Army, Air Force, USMC) or Admiral (Navy).
An easy way to remember the order of ranks for Generals is the saying "Be My Little General" (Brigadier Gen, Major Gen, Lt Gen, General)

The highest Rank in the U.S. Military is Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. By the way Brigadier General is a 1star General. And so far everybody is wrong because the CINC is the commander of the military. but it is not a rank. also there is no such thing as a 5 star General anymore for all of you people who keep saying it.

You also have to take into account billet. An example of this is Marine General Peter Pace (Head of the Joint Chiefs) and Marine General James Conway (Commandant of the Marine Corps). Both are Marine four star Generals but General Pace hold the higher billet.
