The highest grade in the military is 4-stars. In the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps, the grade is called General. In the Navy and Coast Guard, it's called Admiral.

There were a few 5-stars, but they have all passed away and there is currently NO legal authorization in the U.S. code for such a grade. Congress would have to pass a law to authorize 5-star appointments.

Brigadier General is only a 1-star.

And the other answerer is incorrect. Commander-in-Chief is not a military grade. It is a Constitutional power of the President of the United States, who is a civilian.

General (4 stars) is the highest rank in peace time. During WWII, the military created the 5-star rank to put US commanders on par with their British counterparts.

In the Army use the acronymn Be My Little General for ascending seniority. Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General and General.

Other services are different.

On the very top of the chain is Commander in Chief, which is the President of the United States. Other than that, I think it varies by branch. I know some of the ranks in the Marines are differently named than in the Army, and same goes for the Air Force and Navy.

Good question, though!
