When Soldiers walk, the way the flag is positioned on their shoulder is the same way it would face were the flag flying freely from a pole. If it faced the other way, it would give the impression that the Soldiers were retreating. In order for that to make sense you have to picture the flag flying from a pole while the Soldiers are walking.
It didn't make sense to me at first, either. I had to ask my husband. =D

This goes into military lore...
Back when American armies still carried flags in their battle formations, when an army was advancing, the flag would not be seen as the traditional blue field in the upper left hand side image. Rather, it is this blue field in the upper right hand side that serves to remind us to go ever forward and accomplish the mission. And indeed it does work for the United States of America has just as proud a military traditionin her two hundred plus years as many of the older nations in the world. It is an example, a reminder, something to look to as inspiration when your chances for success seem bleak.

The American soldier never retreats. When you are moving forward, the flag will look like is facing opposite, however if you are retreating the flag would look normal. The American soldier never retreats, hence the flag looks that way

The flag is that way so that its supposed to look like your moving forward. If you had one on each shoulder the blue Field would be in a different corner on both.
