It's the strength of the two ingredients. 5mg of hydrocodone and 500mg acetaminophen (paracetamol) commonly known as Tylenol. Because of the acetaminophen and potential liver problems, take no more than eight per day.

Hope this helps.

The 5-500 means 5 Mg of hydrocodone and the 500 Mg of Tylenol.

I wouldn;t take too much more than the prescribed about, because the tylenol can become liver toxic. There are other meds which have more opiates (the hydrocodone part) which your dentist can give you if the pain is still there.

And insist.

Because good pain control is good medicine.

You should take as prescribed, I use to use this medication on a regular basis and I could take 1 to 2 tablets as needed for pain. Another time I had knee surgery, and right after the surgery, I was instructed to take 3 at once, I didn't know you could take that many at once. Of course that was a one time thing. So, I would say that your prescription would call for the 1 or 2 every 4 hours as needed for pain. If that doesn't work I think you should call your doctor and they may put you on another medication (stronger) that will help you. This happended to me one time after I was recovering from some serious dental treatment (large root canel) and the vicodin would not work so the dentist prescribed some capsules and they helped me get through it.

If it's your prescription read the bottle. It will give you the proper dosing. Anything above that could be harmful. If it says 1-2, then start with one, if it doesn't relieve your pain then take two and wait the alloted time (4-6 hours) before taking more. If they don't help, contact your doctor and let them know in case they need to change your prescription.

JOE B,
THE PHARMACIST RESPONDING IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. BE SURE TO ONLY TAKE THE PRESCIBED AMOUNT AND DO NOT TAKE ALCOHOL DURING ITS USE.
FOR THIS PRESCRIPTION THE USUAL DOSE IS 1 TEASPOON(or 5 ml) EVERY 4-6 HOURS AS NEEDED FOR PAIN.

I usually blow the pills or drink a couple beers with them. It's not good for you, but neither is too much butter or salt. Just be careful with them.
