People cannot agree on anything sometimes.
This can be due to interpretation of the Bible, differences over doctrine, schism, the progressive or conservative branches leaving, or joining, open rebellion, revelations by founders, differences over ritual, and a thousand myriad reasons.

Because many christians have a "cafeteria" approach to religion. They want to be able to take what they like and leave what they don't. Of course the Catholic church considers that to be heresy and heresy leads to hell without hope of redemption.
