A co- worker of mine bought a miniature dachshund from a petland in Illinois. she spent $650. on the pup, it was APRI registered, (this registry is crap) and after having it a day she noticed he was sick. It turned out he had kennel cough, he was dehydrated and he had a respiratory infection and she spent a small fortune on the vet bills to keep the dog alive. The store's guarantee was worded so well she recieved no compensation on the money she spent on the vet just a day or two later.
If i were you I would keep looking and steer clear from stores that sell puppies. Look into rescues or look up breeders in your area.

I wouldn't recommend buying from pet stores for many reasons. Besides, there are so many Siberian Huskies currently placed with rescue groups in need of good homes. You can find a wonderful dog, at little cost, and feel good about giving them a safe and happy home. We have two Huskies and they are both rescues. The first we adopted from a local Humane Society, and the second we adopted from Adopt-A-Husky, which we found on line. It is a terrific organization. Huskies can be challenging dogs sometimes, so many end up homeless. But, if If you have done your research on huskies and know that you have the type of home environment that suits them, the rewards are endless. They are great dogs. Just do a search on line for Siberian Husky Rescue or Siberian Husky Adoption and you'll find more sites than you know what to do with. Good luck!

Please keep looking for a breeder, even if they are out of town. You pay MUCH more than you would from a breeder (like over $1000 compared to probably less than $500). I don't know how much huskies go for but let me give you an example of a breed I do know, chihuahuas. If you go to a breeder you can get a papered one for $500-$600. If you go to petland expect to pay at least $1500 (I know some one who recently bought a long hair chihuahua from them for $1800).

Also those puppies have been in a cage and have to pee and poop where they are. They don't get any kind of training before they leave. As a breeder myself, I don't let my dogs go until 12 weeks and by that time, they know to go outside to potty and if the new owners are consistent with them, they are a breeze to potty train.

Unless the dog has just come into the store, the puppies develop "pet store" syndrome (unless your petland is different from all the ones I've seen). They sit behind glass and can't be touched (yes people can get them out to play with them but most of the time they sit behind glass). They learn to be shy to the touch the longer they are there.

That's not even including the fact that you may end up with one of the sick pet store puppies. It is not unheard of for puppies from pet stores to come to you with kennel cough or other serious disorders (both illnesses and genetic disorders). You can't see the parents so you don't know what they look like or act llike.

All this without yet mentioning that most pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills (and all the horrors behind that).

Please keep looking for a breeder (and visit the facility so you know what is going on). Try looking on the internet, contacting a the breed club, go to AKC's website and see if they list any breeders near to you. It will well be worth your time to find a healthy, stable dog.

Never purchase a dog from a pet store. We have 3 huskies, one of which we rescued from a shelter that had pretty much given up on her. The other 2 were turned back into a breeder after someone decided puppies were too much trouble. Huskies are not for everyone and unfortunately because of that they end up in shelters fairly often.

If you really want a husky, you will find the right one. Just be patient, no need to rush into it.

Dont buy from a pet store. They are puppy milled dogs. They will more then likley have a whole world of health problems, maybe not now but when they age they will. Espeacially a breed like a husky which is prone to bad hips as it is. You need to find a good responsible breeder.

Petland buys their puppies from puppy mills, regardless of what "story" they tell you about how they "work with breeders" and blah, blah, blah.

I'm not against buying dogs from a good/reputable breeder who is looking to improve the breed. Its the money grubbers who produce large amounts of puppies just to make a buck I'd like to knock some sense into.

absolutely do not buy from a pet store. buy from a breeder who has given the puppy all of their shots to date and ensure that the parents were checked for hip and other problems. if you buy from a pet store your pup could be predisposed to many genetic disorders that will make their life more difficult and cost you more money in the long run. find a good breeder and buy from them. personally i bought two from the people at counts cove kennel and they are absolutly beautiful, energetic, and fun... cant exactly say well behaved but thats not the breeders fault... good luck in finding a breeder that will work for you
