This is for my daughter-in-law. The little girl is really smart. I've already advised them to turn off the DVDs and TV to let her play and use imagination. She screams in the car, store, restaraunts and everywhere. She did not scream at me when I visited, only cried at first until she remembered who I was or when hungry or tired. I also believe she is seeking attention. Parents are 36-31 and also a child about 4 mos.

There could be a lot of reasons for this the kid is almost two is a big one this is a difficult time for little ones they are trying to become more independent and it is frustrating. They know what they want but can't always communicate well. Very frustrating!!!!

Another problem could be that she is feeling some sibling rivalry some times parents get tied up with the new baby and the other kid feels left out.

she maybe trying to get attention she sees the parents react to the babies crying so she is crying it will all work out.

The best advise I can give you is to tell your daughter in law to ignore her when she is screaming and having fits and to make sure she spends quality alone time with the little girl.

Her world is rocking right now and it is very important for parents to remember she needs to know they still love her just as much as they did before the new baby.

Get them the book "Raising Your Spirited Child" by Mary Kurchinka ASAP! It was a lifesaver for my now 10 y.o. DD! (she also wrote a great book about sibling rivalry, which may also be in play here.)

Also, they need to give her attention BEFORE she freaks out. They need to notice if she is starting to get over stimulated, or might be feeling left out because of the new baby.

She probably didn't scream for you because you were focused on her and not just the new baby. She craves one on one attention and should be allowed to have it.

She is going through "The terrible twos". Quite normal for her age. The screaming is an attention device. Obviously they have given in to her screaming as she continues to do it. They need to let her know that screaming is not an appropriate form of communication and if she wants something she is to ask for it otherwise she will be ignored. Televisin and DVDs are not the cause of the problem but if she spends too much time watching them she will turn into a couch potato, gain weight as well as loose intelect. When she acts up she should be put in time out, she should not be allowed to scream in stores and restaurants. My daughter acted up only one time in public. I took her home the moment she did it, placed her into her dad's hands and went back to do more shopping. She did not accompany me for six months when I went shopping or out to lunch with my friends and this KILLED her because she was always a social child. Finally one day she convinced me to let her go shopping with me and she was better than gold. You would think she was wearing a halo she was such an angel...and she never misbehaved in public again. Not even on an eight our flight across country from California to New York and she didn't sleep a week the entire way! About half way through the flight the PILOT came back because the entire flight staff was yacking about this little girl who was a total delight and he took her into the cockpit himself! He brought her back to me begging me to tell him what I gave her to make her like that LOL. I just believe and firmly that if you start out disciplining right from the beginning you're not going to have as many problems, and no my daughter was NOT an angel. She went through the terrible twos, horribly! I just stood my ground, many times putting her in her room and grabbing the headphones for myself.

if all of her needs were met and on time, physical needs plus loving attention and affection, then smack her little mouth when she screams not the full hand just your fingers like a pop on her mouth-or spray her face with a small bottle of plain water- it will startle her and she will get insulted. she needs to come back down to earth and act civilized.
