why do they go for the athletic ones and not the smart ones?? It just occured to me...

Im not saying all guys just the most that i know. And im not saying the smart girl is smart... what if they look the same as the athletic girl?

A lot of it is about a body. Athletic girls are more likely to be fit, as well as know how to stay in shape. They might be able to join a guy hiking, rock climbing, playing sports, whatever common interests they find.
It's an indication that she knows how to take care of her body and knows how to stay healthy without being obsessed with dieting and being rail-thin. She's may have more energy and can be more spontaneous and up-for-anything. Plus, chances are good that she'll be more active during sex.
As for why guys DON'T go for the smart ones? Lots of reasons, but I don't know that it's true. They might be intimidated that the girl is smart enough to win any argument with logic, and a lot of guys I know aren't used to fighting that way with women; most of them have grown accustomed to emotional whining, and not much intelligence is required to win those fights. Smart girls may not stand out as much as athletic ones (let's face it, the basketball team gets more press coverage than the chess club; it works with both guys and girls).
It's the classic brains vs. brawn debate. See if most girls go for the athletic guys and not the smart ones; it's not just a guy thing.

I think they might be afraid that they wont be able to keep up with our understand their girlfriend if she's smarter than them xD I guess they go for the athletic ones because guys like athletics also and feel more comfortable with girls who do the same thing as them -shrug- (they're scared of the smart ones >_>)

Maybe it's just the guys that you like that are going for the athletic girls.
Not all guys prefer one type of woman. I know it's cliche' but there is someone for everyone.
There are guys that go for the big girls, the nerdy girl, the short girl, the tall girl, the goth, the spoiled, helpless, bad girls etc.
Every guy is different but they aren't complicated. Don't over think it too much. It will drive you crazy.

Some men prefer athletic women because being fit is sexy. Some women like intelligent women because being smart is sexy. Some men like the combo package.
Suffice to say, it's not a generalization you can make.

because they have nice bodies. i try to find a balance of both, but if i had to choose, i take an athletic girl over a smart girl.
probably because i'm still young and think more short-term (like sex) than long-term (marriage) concerning relationships at the moment.

because even though a lot of guys like personality almost all guys are gonna go for someone they are physically atracted to. if you look good there probebly gonna notice that first and go for it.

because athletic girls arent fat and they like to have sex in crazy positions you cant get a fat girl in....
