As it seems like you have already surmised, Jesus didn't say he was God because he is not God. He is God's son. A claim that God himself made at Jesus' baptism (Matt 3:17). Instead, Jesus pointed out that he has a god at John 20:17 "I am ascending to my Father and YOUR Father and to my God and YOUR God." God doesn't have a God. But Jesus has a God because he is NOT God, he is God's son.

As for his statement about he and his father being one... It's interesting that just a couple of verses later (John 10:36) he told the people who were criticizing him "do YOU say to me whom the Father sanctified and dispatched into the world, ‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, I am God’s Son?'" See, he told them he was God's Son, not God. Then in verse 37 he repeated what he meant by saying, "... even though YOU do not believe me, believe the works, in order that YOU may come to know and may continue knowing that the Father is in union with me and I am in union with the Father."

So by saying that he and the Father were one, he meant that they were "in union with each other." He made similar statements about being one with his apostles, but certainly we know that he didn't mean that they were "God the Apostles." The Bible also refers to man and wife being one, even calling them "one flesh" even though that is physically impossible. It is clear when you look at the context of the whole Bible, "to be one" means to be in "one accord" or to be "in unity with."

John 10:30:
"I and the Father are one."

John 8:56-59
56Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad."
57"You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!"

58"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"

the term I am was what God called himself to moses.

Gospel of John: "in the beginning was the word and the word was God...and the word became flesh"
Jesus also said, 'I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the father except through me"
How good do you have to be or how many prayers a day do you have to say to be saved from your sins? Are you sure? We have only one way to salvation and that is through the sacrifice of a perfect savior Jesus the Christ. He was prophesied over 300 times in the Old test. He is real and he can save You.
God bless you

He did. John 8:56

"Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day;he saw it and was glad.
v57...You are not yet 50 years old,the Jews said to him,and you have seen Abraham?
v58 I tell you the truth, Jesus answered,"before Abraham was born,I AM.

(then the Jew picked up stones to stone Him) they knew exactly was he was claiming of Himself.

Again in John 10:31-33 a similar occurance. Jesus again made the claim of Deity.

He did say it. He said, "before Abraham was, I AM." He existed long before Abraham and used the name of "God" as His own name. By this statement, He said I AM GOD. Of course there is only ONE TRUE GOD and Jesus is the second member of the ONE TRUE GOD - God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost.

Why would he?

It's pretty silly for you to think that he might say something like this just to satisfy some debate between pinheads 2000 years later. What he said back then was appropriate then.

I hope you're not making the mistake about trying to form a conclusion based on lack of evidence. That would be like saying, "the girl at the bank has NEVER said that I disgust her, therefore she's hot for me!"

Take this into consideration, in John 8:58 "Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” " Now When God was talking to Moses via the burning bush, didn't he describe Himself as "I AM"?

because of that they kill him, he equal him self with God that what they always says in the bible
read it carefuly and u will see it

"I am he," Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground. (john 18:6)

What this words mean to them?

u need to study the culture of the jews to understand what they undestand that time from these words.

Must He say it the way Muslims demand it? You mean there's no other way to say it or to imply it such that those with Him will not be mistaken as to what He meant? I already told you in John 10 that the Jews KNEW that He claimed to be God. Why are you so hard of understanding?

"Again the High Priest asked Him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
"I Am," said Jesus, "and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."
The high priest tore his clothes. "Why do we need any more witnesses?" he asked . "You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?" They all condemned Him as worthy of death." (Mark 14:61-64)
The "blasphemy" for which Jesus was condemned was making Himself equal to God.
