every year my dogs get worms. I'm tired of going to the vet every time but haven't had good luck with dewormers from the store or natural remedies.

Putting some of the dog's hair in his food can lower the chances of worms in dogs. It cuts up the worms and keeps them from propagating. The only OTC wormer I have really had any luck with is 8 in 1's Erliworm. It's liquid, but easier to use than the pills were.

If you haven't had any luck with over the counter meds you shouldn't be using them.

It is VERY important that a Vet sees a fecal sample of your dog. That tells him what type of worm med to give your dog. The dosage is measured by your dog's size. You don't want to treat a dog with any medication when you are not sure WHAT you are treating. How do know your dogs get worms every year? You can't see all worms.

Is your dog on heartworm prevention? Most heartworm preventions contain intestinal parasite protection. Heartworm pills should be given every month, so not only would your dog be getting heartworm protection, but also parasite protection.
It is not your vet fault your dog is having this problem. This is why yearly exams are recommended, so that these things can be checked for. It is not your fault either, but there are measures you can take to help prevent it.
Picking up poop from the yard and heartworm prevention with intestinal parasite protection added will make a huge difference.

Sorry, I know you asked about over-the-counter medication, but heartworm prevention is VERY important for dogs, so if you are doing that, you may as well make sure it is effective for all parasites (except tapes, of course).
Ask your vet about it.

One of the best and safest broad spectrum canine dewormers is Nemex or Nemex 2, the chemical in this is pyrantel pamoate and it will take care of all worms except for tapeworms and heartworms. It is a very safe drug and can be used on pregnant dogs and puppies as young as 2 weeks of age.
