My neighbor and friend has just had a baby (yay!), but during delivery she dislocated her pelvis. She will be stuck in bed for 6-8 weeks. I know there is the little things that I can help her out with, plus her mom is coming to help. But I was wondering if any other moms out there were confined to bed this long after delivery, and if so what were some of the things that helped you out the most or meant the most?

The baby was little, just over 6lbs. But I am sure this is just a freak incidence.

Yikes.

And, how nice of you.

Apart from pretty much offering maid-cook-nanny services, which is probably what's wanted more than anything -- is anybody looking after the new father?

I might get some thumbs down for this, but bringing him a six-pack of good beer would probably not go unappreciated. And not just by him; heaven knows she'd probably appreciate him being in a good mood.

Thinking about this, if it was me, I'd also be choking for reading material. Do you have a FreeCycle group in your area? (www.freecycle.org) Asking for people's already-read but recent magazines might be a good idea, or see if you can pick up some at work or similar. Offer to hit the library for her, too.

Wash her hair for her. It may sound kind of strange, but you feel so much better when the little things get done. If she can actually take a shower, go over and hold the baby for her so she can take as long as she needs, or so she can take a nap. My husband had surgery on his right knee 6 days before our son was born, so neither of us could drive for 2 weeks! Any errands she needs run, even just to the store for milk or diapers is a huge help! Plus, you may think of getting her a new nightie or PJ's.

Get other neighbors or people in your church together and set up a schedule to have a different person each night bring her and her family dinner for a week or two. I was never bed ridden after my baby was born, but I had a c-section and had a hard time doing normal things for a few weeks and it was really a big help to have someone else cook up a simple dinner for us.

I bet she delivered an elephant. She sure must have gone thru something. Cook her some meals and do her laundry and help her with whatever she asks for. Go buy her some grocery items, pads, shampoo, soap or whatever she needs.
You are a really good friend. The world needs more people like you.

see if she needs you to clean like vacuum, dust things she can't do for herself. if you are going to the store call her and ask if there is anything you can get for her so her mom doesn't have to leave her alone.
