Opt for a simple but absolutely hilarious decor here
I have seen this done on at least three ocassions and it is a scream every single time I've seen it done !!
Do a simple -- really good tasting cake and a very simple compatible icing --- then -- no matter what your Dad's age
Blanket the top of the cake with candles -- do like 60 or 70
at least--- and keep it from him until the moment that it is brought in ---all ablaze---- it will nail him to the floor and the guests will not stop talking about the "gag" for weeks !!!! He'll Love It !!!

The cakes when your little are like icing and cake.... If you are older you are watching your weight and if you are going to eat cake it better be grand.
Depends on what your father likes :
Chocolate : add some crushed chocolate cookes on the sides or shave a chocolate bar with a vegetable peeler. In the middle make some chocolate ganache.
Strawberry: Mix heavy whipping cream with powered sugar till stiff. (I would get 4 boxes) Layer strawberrys in the middle with some strawberry glaze and top with strawberries

After creating the cake, use a nice (health and regular, not colored) iceing to write something like "Happy Birthday" and under that write somethin' like "To the Best Dad in the World, ". Add your dad's name in that blank after the comma.

However you decorate it, freeze it first. This will make it moister, and it will be much easier to decorate!!
