Up to the early 20th centry, slaveholders used the same Bible to perpetuate the system of slavery. They pointed to numerous passages in both Hebrew and Christian scriptures that enjoin God's people to keep slaves, sell their daughters into slavery and in which slaves are told to obey their masters. The Southern Confederacy was a hotbed of Christian evangelical fervor, and Southern Methodists and Baptists split from their Northern counterparts over the issue of slavery.

Considering that Christians used to use the Bible to DEFEND slavery, how are the rest of the people supposed to take them seriously on issues such as gay rights?

While it's true that hate groups such as Aryan Nations, the KKK, Knights of Camile, and other White Supremacists Organizations, have used Religion, and even the Bible to support slavery and racism, most Christians and Hebrews did not, and do not advocate slavery, nor does God, but in biblical times, all were well aware that it existed in the order of various empires and/or governments of man at that time, and in keeping order, obeying the laws, and such, to also obey the laws. When asked about paying taxes... Jesus instructed his disciples to give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's. In the same way Jesus was not an advocate of taxation, no more than slavery, but following the law as it was the order of the day. The first rule of heaven is order.

I understand your point.
Slave holders DID use the Bible to promote and justify slavery.
My ancestors were taught that it was God's way bullcrap.
They had no other choice but to accept it or be whipped or die because our own religion was not permitted to be practiced.
It was primarly lost because of slavery.

I wish I could give you a "right" answer to the gay rights question.
Some people are born gay. That's just the way it is.
I don't hate gays, I hate pedophiles and rapists.

Yes but Christians are not the ones enslaving people now, Muslims are still enslaving children in work houses, men from foreign countries still employ indentured servants who work in american resturants that serve the chinese food, men enslave women that are on sex websites and force them to do porno, while there are women from foreign countries who are employed for the sex slave industry in other countries as well as in the US. So I think you need to open your eyes to what is going on now, and realize that it is not religion that is enslaving people these days, but the sex industry and the money making industry that employ children chained to there work area.

Great, a guy named pretty. I wonder what your agenda here is.

Look, who started the Abolitionist movement in America? Christians! Who started the Suffrage movement in America? Christians!

Anyone who tries to use the Bible to condone slavery, murder, racism, violence, or hatred is just plain wrong. Try reading it.

They were seriously misinterpreting those verses, that they knew little about.
Are you also forgetting that there were many Christian abolitionists as well? Or would you rather ignore that little fact?
