Great site! History of Police and Military dogs> http://www.geocities.com/ericsquire/articles/dogshist.htm
I thought this was interesting! >
By the 5th century B.C., various societies had adopted these strategies. According to Michael G. Lemish, "Persians, Greeks, Assyrians and Babylonians all recognized the tactical advantage of war dogs and deployed them as forward attacking elements" (War Dogs). In Greek Fire, Poison Arrows and Scorpion Bombs (Woodstock & New York 2003), Adrienne Mayor writes:
According to Pliny, the King of the Garamantes of Africa had two hundred trained war dogs "that did battle with those who resisted him." The cities of Colophon and Castabala in Asia Minor also maintained troops of war dogs that fought ferociously in the front ranks. The Hyrcanians of the Caspian Sea and the Magnesians were also feared for the large hounds with spiked collars that accompanied them on the battlefield." (this from Aelian). Polyaenus reports that Cimmerians were driven out of Asia Minor in the 6th C. B.C. by the vicious hounds of King Alyattes, who "set his strongest dogs upon the barbarians as if they were wild animals, killed many and forced the rest to flee shamefully." <

The first answer is not really correct. Police and military working K9s are not trained in Schutzhund. They often come from Schutzhund lines, but they aren't the same thing. Comparing Schutzhund to police K9 is like comparing taekwondo to being a trained Thai kickboxer. Not in the same league (and I train in Schutzhund with my Malinois, btw). And I've never heard of a ridgeback in police or military K9, at least in the US. The top dogs in police K9 as patrol dogs are German shepherds and Belgian Malinois with occasional Dutch shepherds, Doberman, and Rottweilers (but not many). There are also single purpose detection dogs, like Labs.

Are you asking about a specific breed here? Because "k-9" refers to every dog in existence.
If you are referring to police "k-9's" again you need to be more specific as there are several breeds used for this work.

They are trained in what is called Schutzhund...German commands, chase, bite, and release commands. Most police dogs are German Shepherds, Malinois, and Ridgebacks. And to the answer below...there ARE Rhodesian Ridgebacks trained as police dogs.
