I'd say that it's safer to use machines if you don't have a spotter.
But keep in mind that free weights allow for greater compound exercises. (such as bench press, squat)

They utilize more than one muscle group, which requires more hormones result in more muscle growth.

Isolation are ones that only require one muscle (bicep curl) are used to shape the muscle..not really to make it grow.

Machines are mainly used for isolation exercises...so I'd say free weights are better. But if you don't want to kill yourself..go with machines for now

Weight machines work the same as free weights but the only difference is that weight machines only work a particular part of the muscle, while free weights work different muscles at a time for example if you do machine bench press that only the chest will work
but if you do bench press the free way it works more muscles like the triceps and biceps as secondary muscles, but I would still recomend you to stick to the free weights because they are less dangerous of injuries

the body moves in 3 planes of motion while machines move in 2. this is why free weights will always be superior to machines. machines do not allow for proper stimulation of the stabilizer muscles, many exercises are not linear either. for optimum results in the development of strength or muscle mass the routine should be based on free weights and supplemented with machines. a routine based on machines can also cause pattern overload.
