Just as all things in life there are unscrupulous people in this world. Whether it is the occupation of being a police officer or a clergyman. That being said I am disgusted at all the defamatory comments concerning police officers.

Each day they put on that badge they have become target to some low life that generally contributes NOTHING to our society. I also don't think men/women become police officers because of the huge salaries they make. Lastly, if you had to deal with death, drugs and just every day BS, I wonder how your demeanor would be!

What your question should be is : Do you think oxygen theives such as criminals are a necessary evil?

The answer....no... THEY take from us, not just materially...but physically and emotionally!

I wouldn't go so far as to say evil...but since they cannot be held accountable if they don't respond to your call and you or someone you love is murdered as a result...I'm not a big fan. I know there are some great police officers, but there are also alot of corrupt cops that abuse their power. I think with more accountablity and an understanding that they are still civilians they could be more towards the necessary side and further from the "evil" side of the spectrum.

I do not think that having people around to make sure that everyone is abiding by agreed upon rules is an evil.

Each person has the ability to take power too far no matter what they do in life, I do believe that the good rise to the top and the bad lose their jobs.

No matter how pissed you get because you screwed up and got caught, it isn't the cops fault that they found you breaking the law.

For most people behavior is based on the likelihood that they will get caught... if there are cops there is a higher liklihood of being caught and therefore less incentive to break the preset rules.

The Police are certainly necessary, but I don't believe they are evil. I know that it seems like they never do anything for you, but really they do, just by being there.
Pick up your local newspaper and read the reports of the disturbances, thefts, and auto accidents.
If there were no Police, we would have to carry a gun like in the old west.

If there were no Police who would stand between you and the criminal? Let's face it. We do not live in a Utopian Society. In the absence of Police we would be at the mercy of several loosely organized gangs. Civil War would rage between them for power over the multitude. The average citizen would be in constant fear. Freedom, as we know it would disappear. Yes, I think the Police are necessary

Police are very necessary, and they aren't evil either. They are there to protect the citizens and enforce the law.
There are some rotten apples, yes. That happens in any organization. Nothing proper funding, better training and appropriate staffing can't solve.

I don't know where you live or how your police treat you or if you are breaking laws.. but I sure do not consider them evil. I am happy that there are people like them that will put their lives on the line to protect me and mine.

No. Some parts of what they do are neccesary, and bad, like having to shoot and kill people. None of the officers that have ever used their sidearms that i know of were happy to do so. Police also provide services to communities, like keeping dangerous people off of road, for example.
