I usually contact my local park district and/or look on my city's website to find out what events are going on each month. Many of these events are free. Some are concerts, storytelling, safety seminars for kids, etc.
Libraries usually have a bunch of events that go on every summer at no charge. They offer reading programs, craft projects, puppet shows and more.
If you contact your local YMCA, they may have programs that you can enroll him in. There are usually local children's museums or science museums that offer programs or events for children for a small fee. Sometimes, you can volunteer your time in exchange for enrolling your son at a reduced fee or even for free.
There's always the traditional skating, nature walks through the parks (where you show your son how things grow and what the world around him is like), canoing, camping, swimming.
You can also look online and find craft projects that you two can do together. Hardware stores like Lowe's and Home Depot offer children's building kits and you can spend the afternoon building a birdhouse together.
Hope these ideas helped! Good luck!

I would definitely look into summer day camps in your area. Recreation centers, schools, and churches are known for holding day camps. If this is hard to find and if you're willing to spend a lot of time planning, I would try and plan the summer with your son similar to the way a day camp might run. You can perhaps try planning a theme for each week or two. For instance, if you plan a science week, you can research special projects for him to do at home or it can be collaborative and you can also plan special trips to a science museum and/or an outdoor activity relating to this topic. Some other themes could be art, sports, animals, insects, etc...whatever your son may be interested in. Don't forget to give yourself a break if you're going to take this on (you may want to see if another parent is interested in planning this with you). There are GREAT websites that can help you plan thematic units. As a teacher I use thematic units quite a bit simply because there are so many different activities (art, games, field trips, writing, math, reading, etc) you can do that relate to a single topic. Just Google a topic with the words "thematic units," go to a local educational store or online and get a book on thematic units...your options should be endless. You're planning ahead which gives you a lot of time to figure things out. Hope this helped!

My now 3 children, boy 9, girl 8, and boy 7, have decided they want to take swimming lessons and join the swim team. My daughter is also active in a cheer leading camp and the boys are playing lil league softball and soccer. See if there is a YMCA or youth group in your area or contact the school and see if they can give you any information on summer activities that are age appropriate and will fit into your schedule also.

Some public schools offer summer school and it is free. There are summer camps that you can put him in for a fee. My kids like to go to McDonald's playground. We usually pick something different each night. One night we will do movies, go out to eat, ect.

Call your local public library, most have programs during the summer to take your child to, and they are FREE!
If not, they should have some books to offer ideas.

Spend time doing simple things that he enjoys like maybe playing ball, roller blading, writing stories, collecting things. Most of all, make sure you talk and listen while you do things with him. It'sreally good that you are looking for ways to be with him and enrich his life. He will be a better person for your time and interest. Good for you, mom!
