the one thing i always told customers at the studio was "it is not going to be like you think it is" and, had i lied, they would never have come back, and they did, time and time again, having the outline done is "scratchy", colouring is more concentrated and therefor numbs with the vibration of the gun, it isnt going to be un noticable but the only place i've had done where i can say it was sore is in my inner arm, a notoriously sore part, i have many mant tattoos and i think once you relax into it you will be eagerly anticipating your new art work and will be fine, please, please do not take pain medication before hand, and do not drink alchohol the preceeding 24 hrs either, eat a small meal 1-2 hrs before hand and take along a bottle of water, relax into it and you will be just fine, really, good luck and enjoy!

Everyone tolerates pain differently so it's impossible for one of us to tell you how it's going to feel FOR YOU, only you will know that answer when you've had it done. The best we can do is give our opinions based on what it was like FOR US.

That being said, I have several tattoos, one of which is a waistband that goes all the way around, including directly over hips. You said yours will be "right around your hip" so I'm assuming you mean somewhere a little more fleshy than directly over the hip. If this is the case, it shouldn't be bad at all. And it's definately not going to "kill you", all tattooing is tolerable, given the right mind set and taking a break when you need one. ;)

I'd advise against taking pain medication, it isn't going to work much if at all and they generally thin the blood which could make bleeding worse. Same goes for drinking alcohol. Just pysch yourself up for it, enjoy the experience and revel in your new ink when it's finished! It's like the tshirt that I want that says "It's all about the pain....the jewelry and ink are just souveniers"!! ;)

If you can't handle the pain, don't get a tattoo.

Concentrate on breathing or listen to your favorite music.
Eat before you go and bring a snack and drink so you don't get faint.

Also, you might want to rethink the hip area if you are thinking about having children later. Stretch marks through a tattoo cannot be fixed.

tattoos really are not that painful...they hurt but you can handle it. about 45 minutes or so before the artist starts tattooing you, take a couple pain relivers...ibueprofen would be the best to take. that should help you tolerate the pain a little better. But there really isnt much you can do. Just dont tense up, stay relaxed and keep yourself distracted. read magazines or bring someone into talk to you. or you could always talk to your artist. they know what youre going through so he/she will most likely chat with ya. Just suck it up and when its all finsihed youll have a kick *** tattoo!!

DO NOT TRY TO EASE PAIN SERIOUSLY !!!!

IT DOSENT HURT IT IS A PLEASNT RELACSING SENSATION YOU WILL LOVE IT AND BECOME ADDICTED TO TATTOOING FOREVER !!!

if you take pain killers you will thin your blood and you will bleed like a mother fu*ker same goes for smoking weed and getting drunk before getting a tat im a tattoo artist and i dont tattoo people under the influence of any pain relife or drugs or alcohol seriously

I THINK SOMEONE HAS BEEN BULL SH*TTING YOU TATTOOING IS NOT PAINFULL

RELAX DONT PANIC SERIOUSLY THERE IS NOTHING TO FEAR IM COVERED IN TATTOOES AND NON OF THEM HURT UNBARABLY

I EVEN HAVE A TATTOO ON MY DICK SERIOUSLY

IF IT HURT SO BAD PEOPLE WOULD NOT GET TATTOOES AT ALL .

the best thing to do is go in and explain to your artist its your first tat and they will relax you and talk to you all the way through

also IM A TATTOO ARTIST SO I SHOULD KNOW !!!
not only that when the needles first hits your skin on your first tat you will think WOW THAT REALLY DOSENT HURT LIKE I IMAGINED

GO AHEAD GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY TATTOOING

I was told that my first tattoo would absolutely kill me.
I wanted it so much, that I hardly felt the pain.
Don't concentrate on the pain, concentrate how great it's going to look once it's done.
Hope this helps.

My first one was also on my hip it was actually one of the least painful, best tip I can give is find a good artist who will take any whining in a stride, bring a friend for moral support, they have topical creams you can put on to deaden the area as well talk to your artist about maybe using one of them.

I wonder if just some dude has one? I have two. one above my left breast which just felt like a needle scraping across the surface of my skin. The 2nd on the other hand hurt like hell! It's fairly large and on my lower back. The more fatty tissue you have in an area the less it will hurt. So if you pick a thin skinned and/or bony area you'll just have to grin and bear it - sorry.

no, I have one on my hip/pe;vic bone area. It did not hrt very bad at all. I supposed it is probably going to be small as well? My tattoo is about the size of a saltine cracker, and it took like 15 minutes. Not bad at all!

do NOT take any pain meds prior to...eat a good meal beforehand....and just keep thinking about the art that you're getting. Concentrate on your breathing or a dot on the floor or ceiling....
