I have had my belly button pierced for about a month now and was relieved that it didn't hurt and didn't bleed at all. I have been cleaning it with sea salt solutions and bactine every single day.

Today it started bleeding. Not a lot but almost like a discharge. Th enormal discharge should be white-ish but it definately looks red and like blood. I haven't read anywhere about blood or red discharge being a sign of infection but it doesn't seem right. Normal after 1 month of piercing or an infection?

Thanks everybody for your answers and just to give an update the redish discarge (blood) stopped a couple of hours after i posted. No other signs of infection so if it doesn't really happen again I guess I'm fine.

To start, stop using the Bactine. It says on the product and site, that it is not intended for use on puncture wounds and that's what a piercing is. Some people use this product with no problem but it tends to dry out and irritate piercings which can slow healing and yes, cause mild bleeding and dry skin. Some blood is normal, but I don't think your cleaning product is helping.

Stop using the bactine and stick with just the salt soaks. The blood is not a sign of infection, infections are also accompanied with soreness, redness and the area will be heated to the touch and the discharge would be greenish as well. You'll also want to keep an eye out for change in depth with the piercing because it could also be a sign of rejection, thought the skin around the holes would be dry and red as well. But like I said, some blood in the discharge can occur, but it shouldn't be a lot.

Either way, if you are really concerned, see your piercer asap.

Im trying to remember when I first got my belly button pierced, and I think that I remember a little bit of red discharge, but not after a month. It was closer to the beginning of the piercing. I would go and ask the person who pierced you if they know anything about whats going on. (Or if the place seemed shady or dirty, ask a different parlor). If its persistant, or the piercer says that blood is abnormal, I would go see a doctor.

Best of luck! Hope you heal well!

i got mine peirced and i had a discharge for 2 1/2 months but it wasnt blood. I was told by the person who pierced it that it was normal. There's a product called H2Ocean that is a salt water spray that you can use to clean it 3 times a day, and when you shower, clean it out with dial soap (it's antibacterial to fight infection), it might be sore still, but try to clean it. If it doesnt go away, definitely see a doctor.

its normall. its only a month old and is still healing.. mine is 9 months old ( i cleaned it every day for the first 3 months with sea salt and an aftercare pierce solution) and mine is still healing.. it still has discharge and bled a few months ago.. so NO it is not infected since tour piercing is stilll really new. but a sign for infection would be green or yello discharge. evcessive swelling or pain, and redness and the piercing feeling hot. so jst keep cleaing it. and it will be fine. it depends how much it frains. but what you are experienceing is norma.. i have also never had any infection with my navel piercing. its just taking a long time to heal since theres so much motion in the wasit/hips. lol

You have nothing much to worry about, that happened to me & several of my friends too. It was normal and out of no where it started to somewhat bleed. Clean it in the shower with simply water & soap. You should also move the bar so you can clean that too. After your done cleaningin apply Neosporin [antibiotic] on it and leave it alone , it'll heal and be just fine. I told all my friends to do that too and it worked perfectly so i hope it helps you!

Sounds normal, if anything else unusual develops then I'd worry.
All the best!
