I accedentally left my skates in my hard guards for a week and now they are rusty, I am going to try using steel wool but I am concerned that it will ruin my blades or make it hard to skate, I need to use them on thursday and I just want to make sure it is okay to use steel wool, and skate on them without getting them sharpend first. Please help me out!

The only way to get rid of the rust is to sharpen them, even if you remove the rust with some type of cleaner the blades aren't quite the same after wards. If you have a large amount of rust from sitting a long time then your blades are pretty much reined, but if you left them in you hard guards for only a week and there is not a very large amount of rust sharpening them as soon as you can will get them back into shape.

Having your skates sharpened will not remove the rust from the blades. The sharpening will only remove rust from the bottom 2 edges of the blade. Having rust on the sides of the blade does not hurt anything and will not effect your skating. To get rid of the rust on the sides use CLR (a rust remover found at grocery stores) or a rust remover designed for bathtubs. Let the chemical sit for 5-10 min and then use a soft cloth to remove the rust. Just read the instructions on the bottle. Do not use steel wool or a sharpening stone as this can damage the blade and throw off the balance. Sharpening stones are only used for removing burrs on the blade edges if you step on something other than ice or rubber, and should not be used to sharpen skates or remove rust. After you have removed the rust with the chemical take them in to be sharpened (not before).

Once they are looking like new protect them by wiping them off with a dry towel after each skate and then putting them in cloth skate guards (not hard plastic ones).

Hope this helps.

If it's just a little rust you could try using an sos pad (steel wool with soap) to get off the majority of the rust off and then just skate on them. If they're REALLY rusty just take them for a sharpening.

you should just get them sharpened, and try washing the sides. steel wool should be okay, and next time don't forget to take them out!

Steel wool will work fine, but you might want to check with the person who sold them to you, if there not too far away.

Really, the only way to fix them is to get them sharpened. I'm sure it wouldn't be too bad to skate on them just once if they are rusty, though. you really should get them sharpened asap
