Yes, I agree, I guess that there would be no incentive if they didn't have a tangible tip for good service. But it just seems like everyone expects a tip these days, restaurant business or other service businesses, good service or poor, they all want tips.

no, because there is some people that just do not deserve a tip.

That's how it is done here. Everything is included in the cost of the meal, waiters & waitresses make good wages. If service is really really good some people still leave a small tip, but it's definitely not required. This makes it a true 'very good service' reward rather than just a habit if you do leave a tip. And if anything truly is wrong, you can always complain to the manager.

I like it better this way because when I lived in the US for several years I often didn't really know how much to tip, it's less headache. And it's more fair when waiters & waitresses just earn their money in a normal, reliable manner rather than that they have to depend on the generosity of the customers.

Restaurant servers and bartenders are paid a subminimum wage, based on the assumption that the customers will make up the rest in tips. This leaves the servers vulnerable to cheap people who will stiff them out of their tips.

That's why there should be an automatic 20% service charge on all food and drink served in restarants, with the 20% to be paid out at the end of the shift to the server or bartender responsible for the sale.

Have you ever worked in the Restaurant business? The cost of food and the markup isn't that great. So how is a business owner supposed to cover all the costs? That is why people have to tip...only if they get good service - that is how the server knows their doing their job. The owner of a restaurant has a pretty good overhead before he even gets to his employee's pay...unless you work at a very fancy restaurant...however the fancy chefs get the money, not the servers. I think the owner would rather have a good chef to pay then the server. Servers are easy to replace.

No, because waiters are paid very little. They have an incentive to serve you better if they know the tip may be coming their way. It's a good system that rewards good workers. So when the service is good, don't be a cheapskate and give a good tip. Many young people earn their college money working as servers.

I think you have a good idea, since it is expected that we should always tip 15%. So, restaurants could just raise the price by 15% and then if you wanted to leave more, you could. But perhaps the restaurants like keeping the prices lower so you feel like you're getting a better value.

Some places add 15%, good or poor service. Also, some of the restraunt owners keep part of it. Now that a reatraunt has added 15% to the bill, the waiters are expexting an additional tip. Really, a tip is paid to the waiter for giving good service.

They do, with parties of 8 or more, usually. TIPS actually means to insure prompt service. It's really up to you to give a tip, but it's always nice if you do even if the server is having a bad day. Most of the time servers only get mininum wage and rely on TIPS to live.

Yes and no, I waited tables for a while, and so many times I thought I did a great job, but not a great tip. I don't think people tip very good anymore. I tip 25% if we have an excellent server. If it's a bigger party the tip should be added.

No. If they did that you would have to tip every time. With system we have now you can let them know they provided lousy service by not tipping or leaving a small tip. If the tip was automatic the service would really get bad because they would get the money whether they did a good job or not.

Absolutely not! If the service is really poor, you're tipping the server anyway and paying more for your food than you should.
