I want to try dying a small section of the undersides of my hair a color to see if it will look good with my coloring; and if it does, I want to put a couple of streaks in my hair. How do I keep the bleach from getting to the parts of my hair that I don't want dyed?

Plase note: I am a cheapskate who has beautifully dyed her own hair before and is dead-set on doing this herself, so please don't try to talk me into an expensive salon treatment!

I'm a freelance writer and editor, so no checks are required. Thank you for caring, though!

Section it off neatly, even the part that you aren't going to bleach for control. Use kitchen foil (off brand works best), Mix your bleach up, apply to hair by placing foil underneath the hair and applying with brush applicator, if hair section is thicker than 1/4 inch apply another foil, don't try to do thick sections it will weigh to much and pull down on hair and you will get "bleed marks" . The hard part is getting it on the foil, so cheap thin foil no longer than 4 inches wide or no longer than 7 inches should be fine. As long as the bleach is not glumped only enough to coat hair you will be fine. Once it is all applied apply blow dryer not directly on hair at low setting for some heat for about 4 minutes ( this will speed it up) NOW if you want to make this almost fool proof invest in some metal clips (Goody brand works) that you would use to secure rollers in place at the base of each foil. about 1.99 at any store that sells hair clips. There you go foiling 101!

Get a shower cap, cut a small hole in it, pull a section of hair through. Rinse the section of hair well after bleaching so none of it gets on the rest of your hair.
This is how expensive salons sometimes highlight hair.

I would check with your employer first to find out if that type of thing is allowed.

If you decide to do it ... just rubber band off a small section and dip it in bleach.
